The body is both a source of inspiration for the actor and a tool for projecting character to the audience. Designed for intermediate- to advanced-level actors, this series of classes will give you powerful acting techniques to complement and extend your previous training. You will find the techniques valuable for performing in both the classical and contemporary repertoire. The class focuses on the seminal techniques of Michael Chekhov, particularly his renowned Psychological Gesture. We will also explore Keith Johnstone's Status Transactions and incorporate elements of Jacques Lecoq's pioneering work on the body and creativity. The classwork culminates in the application of all the techniques to memorized monologues.
Goals
- To learn a set of psycho-physical acting techniques that will release the full expressive power of your body and voice in the creation of dramatic characters.
- To develop the ability to drop your own persona and completely transform yourself into a wide variety of characters - physically, mentally, and emotionally.
- To learn how to radiate your performing energy out to the audience, in order to engage them on a deeply emotional level.
- To integrate your body, voice, and emotions into a unified performing instrument.
- To free your creative imagination.
About the Instructor: Terry Glaser Currently a faculty member in the Theatre Arts Department at the University of San Diego, Terry Glaser has over twenty-five years of experience with professional theatres and universities as an acting teacher, stage director, playwright, and theatrical translator. In addition to her work at USD, Terry has taught acting at UCSD, USC, CalArts, Earlham College, the Michael Chekhov Studio-USA West, the Fritz Theatre, and the Old Globe Theatre.
In her teaching of acting, Terry focuses on the intersection of physicality and psychology, continually developing techniques that reinforce, complement, and extend traditional Stanislavsky training. She is particularly skilled in acting training for opera and period styles, such as Shakespeare and Restoration Comedy, integrating the special linguistic demands of these nonrealistic styles with the physical, emotional, and imaginative demands inherent in all acting. In all of her teaching, she fosters in students the ability to release their creativity, expand their personal boundaries, and function at their maximum potential.
Terry's writing includes original scripts and translations of classic plays and operas. Her translations include Aristophanes' The Frogs, Feydeau's A Flea in Her Ear, Monteverdi's L'Orfeo, and Offenbach's Croquefer. Her original plays include Twisted Perspective, which she directed at the California Institute of the Arts. In addition to directing productions of her own plays and translations, Terry has served as stage director for over 40 professional and university productions of plays and operas across the country.
Terry holds a B.A. in Playwriting from Brown University and an M.A. in Theatre from Syracuse University. She has specialized training in the Michael Chekhov Technique, Richard Schechner's Rasaboxes(TM), masks, Boal's Theatre of the Oppressed, Period Style, and Lecoq.
